Marrakech

 We had a lovely evening and night at Dar Jnan Tiouira Dades. It's right in the heart of the gorge.  A very small village that the streets roll up at dusk, a working town.

We pass through Skoura, our guide Anas's home town and he takes to meet his mom, aunt, three sisters and a brother-in-law.  We enjoy tea and a visit.

We drive along the countryside,passing by a couple of Moroccan movie studio and sets. 


On to UNESCO Site Ait Ben Haadou Kasbah.  Lots of films were set there, like Lawrence of Arabia, the Gladiator and Jesus of Nazareth.

We told our guide Jamal, we didn't want to walk to the top.  He said ok, just halfway, then just a little bit more and so on until we were a little bit more all the way to the top.  Little devil!




The view from the top was worth the rubbery knees and heavy panting.
We continued our journey to Marrakech through the Atlas mountains and reached the highpoint in fog and 8'C.  It was another harrowing ride, thank goodness Anas is a good driver!  There was a new road cut into the mountain but you could still see remains of the old and that would have been even more nerve racking!





Arrival in Marrakech Medina is awe inspiring!  So much traffic, so many people, so much noise and so many things going on!  We check into our hotel and all of a sudden quiet!
Finally a bed that doesn't bruise the hips, it's soft!!
Off to find dinner, Anas WhatsApps directions and we find it ok!

We wander back through the Medina in a light rain.


Early day tomorrow with a tour of the Medina with a guide so we don't get lost.  Looks mostly flat, hopefully not too many stairs!

Day Trip to Meknes and Volubilis

 The drive out of Fez was largely through the industrial and commercial area.  Much the same in every city, except for the language of course.  We are met by Issam, our guide, in the Meknes Medina and begin our walking tour.  It's hot, probably about 28-30'C. First stop a look at the Royal Golf Course.  It is actually open to the public but out of range for most of the population at 50E for 9 holes. A visit to a mosque, one of the few open to non-muslims. The mosaics were beautiful. Next stop the market, I bought spices, what else? We visited the music museum, the old instruments were amazing. Mosaics everywhere. Saw some of the cymbals and drums yesterday in Fez Medina. The walkways are narrow. On to Volubilis, which is the best preserved archaeological site in Morocco and a UNESCO world heritage site.  It was about 31-33'C and walking around was a challenge. Touring Casablanca

 Our driver, Kamal, picked us up at 10 and we drove to Hassan ll Mosque, one of the most iconic landmarks of Casablanca.  Built in 1987-1993.  Thousands of engineers and artisans working 24 hours a day for the 6 years.  Many modern innovations mixed with the traditional. A very imposing structure, with striking interiors. The great hall and our guide Najat. The chandeliers are 800 kilos and made of Italian Moreno glass. The men's ablution room.  14 lotus shaped fountains run to prepare for prayer. The women's is the same with different coloured mosaic. The stone, mosaics and plaster carvings are amazing.  We drive around the bay to view the mosque from afar. Essaouira

 Our new driver,Kamal, met us at the Marrakech Riad and hotel and we set off for Essaouira.  It took awhile to leave Marrakech, and then the road was quite good and traffic wasn't too bad.  We passed through several small villages and it appears Monday is market day.  Very busy with the donkey cart parks full.  We stop at an argon oil cooperative operated by women.  We see the nuts and how they are traditionally cracked. The goats love the nuts and climb the trees to get them.  Apparently they just like the shells not nuts. Nuts. The lady cracks them with a rock. In order for the nuts to be edible they have to be roasted. For cosmetic uses they are ground. We carry on to Essaouira and check into our hotel. Very nice, on the beach of the Atlantic ocean.  We asked Kamal to take us to the nearby Gary Player designed golf course.  He had not been to a golf course and was keen to understand what the big deal was to us.
